Making a DifferenceA Project of the Heritage CommissionA new display is being developed on the Seminary campus themed MAKING A DIFFERENCE. The display honors ministries in town and country churches - both past and present. The focus of the display is five stained glass windows that were take from the Baptist Church in Cathay, ND. The windows were placed in the church in 1913. The church closed in 1995, and the windows were removed a few years later. The Heritage Commission acquired these 92-year-old windows in August 2004. Dr. Ernie Zimbelman and Mr. Jim Sievers travelled to Cathay and transported the windows to their new home in Sioux Falls. Dr. Zimbelman and Rev. Leon Bill worked diligently restoring, refinishing, and mounting the windows. This attractive display has been made possible because of the generous gift of the children of Arthur J. and Lenora B. Fischer. The Fischers served over eight town and country churches throughout Dakotas and Montana over a period of 50 years. The central focus of this display is the restored window in the picture below. The plaque will read: Make a Difference - They Did The rest of the stained glass window display will be placed in the Chapel of the Worship and Leadership Centre. In addition to this display, another is already in place, celebrating the beginning of the Conference's Seminary in Rochester, NY. Another display is in progress that will honor urban and suburban ministries. It will feature the pulpit furniture from the first German Baptist church in America - The Fleischmann Memorial Baptist Church founded in 1843. This furniture was acquired by the Heritage Commission in May 2004 and brought from Philadelphia to Sioux Falls. |
